In the aftermath of a bitter and bloody war for independence, Texans have finally claimed their freedom from Mexico--but they don’t have much else to brag about. Joshua Buckalew has left behind the deserted battlefields that claimed his brother Thomas. The war has cost him much but it has also given him a strong bond to the land and to the Mexican families who stood with him against the tyrannies of Santa Anna. Josh is travelling with Ramon Hernandez his best friend and the man who had fought with him, side by side. Where they are going, he isn’t quite sure. His home is ashes--burned by either the retreating Texans or the advancing Mexican army—and the land is full of bandits and opportunists who would happily shoot Ramon simply because he is Mexican. In Bitter Trail, Kelton tells the story of a tough teamster named Frio Wheeler whose wagons haul cotton from Texas to Mexico. Sounds like a peaceable enterprise? The problem is that the Civil War is raging throughout the South and Wheeler's cotton is to be sold for gold--gold used to buy guns and ammunition for the Confederate army. And, added to his balky mules, the broiling heat, and killing drought of the Mexican dessert, Wheeler has even more serious matters to contend with: His wagons are attacked, his cotton bales are burned, he is captured and tortured by bandidos in league with Union sympathizers, and he is betrayed by his best friend--his former partner and brother of the woman he loves! 9780812551181 0.00

“Eyes of the Hawk was inspired by an old Texas legend about an embittered father who swore to kill the town that had killed his son, and let vengeance turn him into the man he hated most.” —Elmer Kelton No one wants you to tamper with a legend, especially by telling the truth. So begins the story of a proud man named Thomas Canfield. He is descended from the earliest Texas pioneers and has inherited their courage and fortitude. To the Mexican citizens of Stonehill, Texas, he is “El Gavilán”—the Hawk—so called for the fire in his eyes, especially when confronted by the likes of Branch Isom. This insolent, dangerous newcomer intends to build his fortune at Canfield’s expense but underestimates his opponent. When a deadly feud ensues, the town of Stonehill heads toward a day of reckoning and the creation of a legend. 9780765360540 0.00

9 Elmer Kelton Hard Trail to Follow (Texas Rangers, No 7)
Forge Books 30/12/2008 0765354292 / 9780765354297 First Edition Edition Mass Market Paperback New Ships in 10-14 Days
Kelton takes the outlaw’s side in his latest western, a turn that promises to lead into some welcome tricky footing for the genre’s genial master storyteller. Luther Cordell gets himself locked up after robbing a bank (honorable enough) but then must hightail it after a partner kills the sheriff during his jailbreak (not honorable). While eluding the law, Cordell laments his life of crime and how easily he could have been an upstanding citizen had one or two breaks fallen his way. In his wake, Ranger Andy Pickard becomes increasingly baffled as each person along Cordell’s trail can’t heap enough praise about how good a man that criminal seemed to be, deep down. Kelton misses the chance to delve into the outlaw’s more complex faults rather than his simplistic virtues, and it all wears a little thin by the time the inevitable showdown occurs. Still, Kelton is such a fantastic hand at guiding his prose through frontier Texas that, as usual, fans won’t be disappointed. It just would have been nice to see him strain a bit harder. --Ian Chipman. 9780765354297 0.00

11 Elmer Kelton Jericho's Road (Texas Rangers)
Forge Books 30/06/2009 0765363704 / 9780765363701 First Edition Edition Mass Market Paperback New Ships in 10-14 Days
Seven-time Spur Award–winner and the author of more than 40 books, Kelton serves up another action-packed western with this sixth volume in his Texas Ranger series. The Texas-Mexico border in the 1870s was a bad place for gringos and Mexicans alike: both sides raided, rustled and murdered to settle old scores from the days of the Alamo and the Mexican War. Texas Rangers Andy Pickard and Farley Brackett are assigned to an understaffed Ranger company along the Nueces Strip, a bit of desert fought over by Mexican rancher Guadalupe Chavez and Texas land baron Jericho Jackson, and they quickly realize that keeping these enemies apart will be a deadly job. An ill-advised killing and a coverup cause Jackson to declare all-out war on the Chavez family, with the Rangers caught in the crossfire. Andy and Farley try desperately to stop the killings but are hampered by a commander who'd rather just let both sides kill each other off. As ambushes and gun battles leave lead-perforated vacqueros and cowboys all over the desert, the Rangers determine that there's more to the feud than family loyalty, racism and old insults. Once again, Kelton offers an exciting tale in which the bad guys are really bad and some of the good guys are, too. His characters are sharply defined, the historical background is vivid and the gunplay can't be beat. 9780765363701 0.00

In Joe Pepper, the title character, while awaiting a hangman’s noose, tells the story of how he discovered a propensity for violence while seeking revenge. The irony is that Joe’s keen sense of justice puts him on he wrong side of the law. Long Way to Texas, taking place just after the Civil War battle of Glorieta Pass in New Mexico, is the story of Lt. David Buckalew, whose remnant of Confederate riflemen is under siege and low on rations and water. Complicating matters is the young officer’s self-doubt and fear of failure. Thomas Canfield of Eyes of the Hawk, known to the Mexican citizens of his town of Stonehill, Texas, as "El Gavilán" — the Hawk — is not a man to forgive a wrong. He sets out to prove this to an insolent ranchman rival who intends building a fortune at Canfield’s expense. The Hawk has a radically different idea: he will destroy the town before yielding to his enemy. This omnibus edition features a new introduction by Dale L. Walker, author of twenty-three novels and a past president of the Western Writers of America. 9780765329769 0.00

17 Elmer Kelton Six Bits a Day (Hewey Calloway)
Forge Books 03/10/2006 0765348462 / 9780765348463 Mass Market Paperback New Ships in 10-14 Days
Hewey Calloway is a fun-loving cowboy who can't shoot straight; his younger brother, Walter, is a serious cowboy who, much to Hewey's horror, wants to marry a pretty girl and become a farmer. Both are looking for a job and a meal in 1889 West Texas. After being mistaken for rustlers and rescued from hanging by a friendly Texas Ranger (a terrific character from another Kelton series), the boys hire on with Mr. C.C. Tarpley's cattle ranch, working for six bits—75 cents—a day. Hewey volunteers them both to drive cattle from San Antonio back to Tarpley's ranch on the Pecos, hoping Walter will forget his fanciful notions. The trip has its share of excitement, but when their Texas Ranger friend asks for help in capturing a hard-boiled case, Hewey gets real nervous. Add some clever cattle stealing back on the Pecos, a range feud between two stubborn cattle barons, rival gangs of cowboys who would rather get drunk together and let their bosses fist-fight, and some of Hewey's pranks, and Kelton, who has more than 40 westerns to his credit, is riding high again. Not much six-gun action, but Hewey's smart mouth more than makes up for the lack of gunsmoke. (Nov.) 9780765348463 0.00

19 Elmer Kelton Stand Proud
Forge Books 04/03/2008 0765360578 / 9780765360571 Mass Market Paperback New Ships in 10-14 Days
“Pain resulting from other men's follies causes Stand Proud's Frank Claymore to develop an iron will that heeds no man's judgment except his own, nor any woman's. Some of his decisions are wrong, and the price of pride proves high.”— Elmer Kelton The jarring strike of the clock in the towering cupola drew Frank Claymore's unwilling eyes to the two-story courthouse. Frank Claymore is not easy to like—to admire, maybe, but not to like. He is cantankerous, stubborn, and intolerant—the very qualities that make him a success as an open-range cattleman on the West Texas frontier. In one of his most memorable novels, acclaimed Western writer Elmer Kelton follows Frank Claymore’s life from the time of the Civil War to the dawn of the 20th century—through marriage, births, deaths, and a creeping change in the society that once hailed him as a hero, but which later has him condemned and tried for murder. 9780765360571 0.00

20 Elmer Kelton Texas Vendetta
Forge Books 01/02/2005 0765344807 / 9780765344809 Mass Market Paperback New Ships in 10-14 Days
In a cloud of gun smoke and hot lead, the Texas Rangers once again blast their way across 1870s Texas in this fifth volume of Kelton's series about frontier lawmen eager to dish out six-gun justice. Following last year's Ranger's Trail, this latest installment finds the Rangers in the middle of a bloody family feud between the Landon and Hopper clans. Rangers Andy Pickard and Farley Brackett are assigned to transport a killer to a county court for trial and hanging, when this easy task turns into a deadly game of escape, ambush and murder. The prisoner, Jayce Landon, killed a Hopper family member in a longstanding feud between the two families. Now one family wants to free Jayce, the other wants to kill him and the Rangers are targets for both sides. Andy is young, still learning about being a lawman and eager to prove himself. Farley is a former outlaw, proud that every man he killed deserved it. The two barely get along as partners, but in a fight they make a good team. When their prisoner escapes, the two Rangers find themselves in a complex and curious situation, uncertain who to arrest and who to shoot. Former Ranger Rusty Shannon returns to help, and together the three lawmen discover that the facts are all wrong, while stacking up dead bushwhackers and getting shot to pieces themselves. Add a fatherly bank robber with a conscience, a willful wife, some plot twists and fancy gunplay, and seven time Spur Award-winner Kelton delivers another terrific western. 9780765344809 0.00
